Preface
The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) is a professional
society of more than 15,000 transportation engineers, planners, and
other professionals in some 80 countries. Its members are responsible
for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods on streets,
highways, and transit systems. Since 1930, the Institute has been
providing transportation professionals with programs and resources to
help them meet those responsibilities. Institute programs and resources
include professional development seminars, technical reports, a monthly
journal, local, regional, and international meetings, and other forums
for the exchange of opinions, ideas, techniques, and research.
The first ITE Student Chapters were organized at the University of
Illinois and Yale University in 1947. By the beginning of 2001, the
number of student chapters had grown to 105 (see the current
ITE Membership
Directory for a complete and up-to-date listing).
Although the programs and activities of each Student Chapter vary greatly,
the goal of introducing students to the transportation profession and
supplementing their classroom and laboratory experiences has been
maintained.
Because Student Chapter membership changes each semester, and officers change
at least annually, some general guidelines were deemed necessary for the
Student Chapters themselves and the other organizations within the Institute
that monitors Student Chapter activities.
The Student Chapter
Manual is intended to be primarily a procedural manual for
Student Chapter advisors to assist in the development and management of Student
Chapter activities. It is also a source book for information, suggestions, and
guidance to ITE Student Chapters, their officers, and their members. In addition,
ITE District Directors and the International Headquarters staff are always available
to assist in any matters relating to Student Chapter operations and increasing the
students' awareness of the transportation profession.
